| Abstract: | The part played by high pressure physics in science and technology is discussed on the basis of the following aspects of high pressure physics:
1. Phase transformations in materials under pressure and the part played by the synthesis of artificial diamonds in the development of high pressure physics.
2. The effect of pressure on the oxides in the earth's mantle and the part played by high pressure physics in a better understanding of the earth's interior.
3. The effect of pressure on the electrical conductivity of materials with special reference to the effect on hydrogen.
4. Superconductors under pressure and the possibility to manufacture superconductors
at room temperature.
5. Magnetic materials under pressure. More attention is given to this aspect. It is pointed out that basic research is far in debt to the total market value of new magnetic materials developed during the past two decades. High pressure studies of the numerous interesting magnetic properties of materials, from the vast source of materials brought forward by basic research, may lead to new technological applications. This may cause a large jump in the market value of magnetic materials. Due to this the author sees a future for the study of the basic magnetic behaviour of materials under pressure. |
