Department of Linguistics and Literary Theory

The Department of Linguistics and Literary Theory is uniquely positioned to accommodate the needs of those students who are interested in the theory and practice of language and texts. This department is the only South African university department which combines the broad strands of linguistics and literary theory while at the same time being independent of a specific language department. This enables us to spread our concerns across language and cultural boundaries in order to accommodate the needs of the wider multilingual and multicultural community in South Africa. The Department is the host department for the BA degree for Language Practitioners. This course is designed to teach skills such as writing and productive skills, translation and editing skills and text and discourse research skills. In addition, the course engenders supportive linguistic, text and discourse, sociolinguistic, sociopragmatic, pragmalinguistic and cross-cultural competence. On a post-graduate level, the honours and MA degrees provide the option for specialisation in either Linguistics with a focus on translation studies, editing and interpreting or Literary Theory with a focus on genre studies and critical language skills.
