Department of Physics

The Physics Department of the University of Johannesburg was founded under the leadership of Prof. Louw Alberts, the first chairman, when the Rand Afrikaans University was established in 1968. From the outset, research received the highest priority and a CSIR Unit of Magnetism was established in the Department soon thereafter. The Unit was later expanded to include semiconductor physics under a new name, the Unit for Magnetism and Semiconductor Physics. Over the years the Department has earned outstanding international recognition in both these research fields. Both magnetism and semiconductor physics remain two focus areas of our research, with Astronomy the most recent addition as a Research Direction within the Department. We strive to maintain a balance between fundamental physics and applied physics, the latter of which is exemplified by the recent successful commercialization of innovative Photovoltaic Technology that was developed by the Semiconductor Group of the Physics Department. The Department takes pride not only in its modern array of experimental research and measurements facilities, but also in the presentation of its highly regarded portfolio of physics undergraduate and graduate courses servicing the scientific, technological, medical, education, and engineering communities of South Africa.
