In 2007 we had our first intake of students registering for the four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree at the University of Johannesburg. This qualification is fully accredited and upon graduation you will be able to register as a social worker with the SA Council for Social Service Professions. The new BSW degree will equip you with the knowledge, skills and values to practice social work in a society that is undergoing significant change. Social workers play a leading role in helping people to solve problems in human relations, in managing a range of social problems in our society and in empowering people to live productive and fulfilling lives. The course is personally enriching and you will be stretched to think critically and to examine your own perspectives on many challenging issue facing our society.The programme consists of theory courses and their application in practice. Throughout your training, you will be required to participate in community based field instruction under the guidance of a supervisor in a diversity of placements such as schools, residential facilities e.g. children’s homes, welfare agencies, government departments and community services. We have a range of partnerships with organizations which will provide you with the opportunity to develop your competencies as a professional. Social work is a challenging career. There is a great shortage of social workers in our country. Social workers are employed in governmental, non-governmental, faith-based and private sector organizations. Special qualities such as a love for people and a desire to be of service to your community and to work for social justice are some of the qualities needed. The Department of Social Work at UJ is committed to relevance, excellence and innovation in social work education.
